Melbourne Storm vs Brisbane Broncos Preview
Ladder-leading Brisbane Broncos head to Melbourne as confident as they’ve been in years of picking up a victory over the Storm – but a 12-match losing streak in the rivalry presents a significant mental hurdle.
With Payne Haas and Ezra Mam returning from suspension, the Broncos bounced back from a 32-6 loss to Souths with a win by the same scoreline over a poor Manly outfit.
Haas and Reece Walsh were especially dominant, while Selwyn Cobbo cashed in with a hat-trick.
The Storm came off the bye into Magic Round and were outplayed 28-12 by the Rabbitohs to slip to a 5-4 record.
Besides back-to-back wins over Souths and the Roosters in Rounds 5 and 6, Melbourne has rarely looked like the perpetual heavyweight we’re accustomed to across 80 minutes.
Somewhat encouragingly, the Broncos’ last three wins over the Storm (albeit in the clubs’ last 25 clashes) were at AAMI Park.
The most recent was in 2016 and last season, the Storm prevailed 32-20 at home in Round 15 before unleashing a 60-12 demolition at Suncorp Stadium in Round 23.
This is only 8-2 Brisbane’s third game away from Suncorp Stadium this season, while Melbourne have won three of four games at AAMI Park.
It’s perhaps a surprise to see the Storm installed as favourites for this one and the weight of history is not enough to override form in a match the Broncos will be up for.
