The Gold Coast Titans are 2-2 and one of the NRL’s up-and-coming teams, but they’re yet to really hit their straps after falling to the Raiders in Round 4. The Newcastle Knights, on the other hand, haven’t been given the chance. Just as they started to look somewhat healthy, Tex Hoy, Kurt Mann and Mitchell Pearce all failed to finish their 22-13 loss to the Dragons. None of the injured trio have been named for this week. However, there is some positive news.

Kalyn Ponga has been named for the first time this season, while Blake Green will be better for the 30 minutes last week. Connor Watson is familiar with the five-eighth role too. Chris Randall, Pasami Saulo and Brodie Jones are new names on the interchange bench. Justin Holbrook welcomes back Brian Kelly to the centres. His decision on who to replace him with has been made easy, though. With Anthony Don ruled out with a hip injury, Phillip Sami makes way for Kelly by moving to the bench.

Provided David Klemmer gets over his knee injury to play on Saturday, the Knights have come out of Round 4’s injury hit relatively well. Their pack can still compete with the Titans through the middle. With Green and Ponga back, there is an argument there for the Knights having the better of the two spines. It’s asking a lot of Green and Ponga to manufacture points in their first hit-out of the season together, but Jayden Brailey’s fine form will help things. Few teams are positon to handle David Fifita on the edge too. While the Titans deserve to be favourites, the Knights aren’t too far behind if this 17 lasts through to Saturday.
