The Canberra Raiders are in a rut. They’ve lost three on the bounce with Round 7’s 26-24 capitulation against the Cowboys the worst of all. Meanwhile, the South Sydney Rabbitohs took the opposite route in their performance last week to come back and stun the Titans 40-30.

Ricky Stuart has made the strange decision of resting Josh Papalii for this one. Joseph Tapine joins the bench while Sebastian Kris and Bailey Simonnson also make the starting side. Jarrod Croker is out. Unsurprisingly, Wayne Bennett has named the same 17 for this week.

We’ve seen enough glimpses out of the Raiders to be hopeful of a close game, but the Rabbitohs look too good at the moment. Marshall is a perfect temporary #6 and Cory Walker fills Latrell Mitchell’s role well enough that the attack runs largely the same. Papalii’s ‘resting’ gives Souths a significant advantage through the middle, which given Canberra’s struggles in attack, could determine the game. It’s difficult to see the Raiders scoring enough points to keep this one close.
