Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors Preview

The Warriors have been a bit of a bogey side for Canberra in recent years, but this is an opportunity the 10th-placed Raiders simply must take to stay in the finals hunt.

In a diabolical Round 8 performance in Redcliffe, the Raiders bottled a big lead before being scuppered by a controversial late penalty and a Shaun Johnson golden point field goal. The season looked forlorn for Ricky Stuart and co. at that point but they have won six of nine since. The Warriors subsequently lost seven straight and axed their coach.

After an agonising 12-10 defeat to the Dragons prior to their Round 17 bye, the reshuffled Raiders nabbed a clutch 20-16 victory in Melbourne with their youthful backline contingent – headlined by two-try rookie James Schiller – standing tall.

On the back of their stirring 22-2 homecoming drought-breaking against the Tigers, the Warriors produced one of their most promising performances of the season in a 28-18 loss to Parramatta. An inability to defuse bombs in a crucial period midway through the second half proved decisive.

Schiller (ankle) and Jordan Rapana (suspension) are both are for Canberra, with Nick Cotric and Albert Hopoate coming in on the wings. Elliott Whitehead also returns.

Some TLT surprises from the Warriors, who have dropped Reece Walsh to the bench, moving Chanel Harris-Tavita to fullback and recalling Daejarn Asi at five-eighth. Dallin Watene-Zelezniak (COVID) returns for Ed Kosi.

The Warriors have won three of their last four in Canberra, including a club-record comeback from 21 points down to edge the Raiders 34-31 in a remarkable victory that had Roger Tuivasa-Sheck’s fingerprints all over it.

The Warriors have the capacity to prove a real nuisance over the closing rounds for some finals aspirants. They still lack attacking strike and have the worst defensive record in the comp – the Raiders should get up, but the line looks far too big here to load up on the hosts.
