Canberra Raiders vs Brisbane Broncos Preview

Canberra is sixth on the ladder and four points clear of ninth, but with the sixth-worst for-and-against in the NRL the Raiders are not yet guaranteed a place in the finals.

Hosting a streaking Brisbane outfit looms as a daunting assignment for Ricky Stuart’s wildly inconsistent charges.

The Raiders responded to a horrific 48-2 loss in Melbourne in Round 24 with a rollercoaster 36-24 win over the battling Bulldogs.

Amazingly, that was the biggest winning margin of their 13 victories so far this season.

Jack Wighton is in the reserves contingent (as is Seb Kris) after being a late withdrawal last week, while Albert Hopoate (ribs) is in doubt and Corey Horsburgh has been named despite a head knock on Sunday.

The Broncos went into last week’s bye on a six-match winning run, with an average margin of 21 points. They dismantled Parramatta 54-10 in Round 24 with the likes of Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam on fire again.

Adam Reynolds (calf) has pulled out, giving Jock Madden another chance in the No.7 jersey. Corey Oates returns on the flank for Deine Mariner and Corey Jensen comes onto the bench.

The Raiders have won four of their last five against the Broncos, including a gritty 20-14 boilover against the previously unbeaten outfit at Suncorp Stadium in Round 6.

The Broncos are also on a three-match losing run at GIO Stadium, last winning their in 2017.

Brisbane is still in the minor premiership hunt and need just one more win to clinch a top-two finish.

They did come out of their previous two byes a bit flat, however, and the Raiders should turn up to be counted in their last home game – which doubles as potentially Jarrod Croker’s last at GIO.
