Canberra Raiders vs Brisbane Broncos Preview
Things continue to go from bad to worse for the Canberra Raiders and a week off is unlikely to have helped. The 44-16 final score against the Roosters in Round 12 flatters the Green Machine somewhat. You could argue that a 52-24 loss to the Dragons last week flatters the Brisbane Broncos too. They were never truly in that game despite the early lead.
Caleb Aekins has lost his spot at the back; Bailey Simonsson is the new #1. Josh Papalii is back with Joseph Tapine also returning. However, Curtis Scott has been stood down and Matt Timoko is taking his place. Karmichael Hunt is completing his incredible return to the NRL after being named in the halves beside Albert Kelly. Jamayne Isaako’s horror performance last week has cost him his spot in the side with Herbie Farnworth moved to fullback.
Where to begin with this one…Both sides have exceeded the period of time that we assume a turnaround is just around the corner. We’ve been waiting for two years for the Broncos to steady the ship. Every time they offer some resistance (34-16 win over the Roosters in Round 11) they back it up with an awful performance or two (lost by a combined 56 points over the last two rounds). Meanwhile, the Raiders haven’t even been able to offer that glimmer of hope. A win over the Bulldogs doesn’t do much for the form guide. Without those two competition points, the Raiders have lost seven games on the bounce. Papalii is a big in. Although, he has been there for a few of those terrible games so isn’t immune to poor form. Fairly even through the middle and equally unappealing out the back, it’s Jack Wighton in the halves and a little bit more quality on the bench that gives the Raiders a slight advantage.
