Preview:

The Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars square off twice in the next four days. The Scorchers could be nipping at the Stars’ heels if they get the better of the BBL ladder leaders this week.

The 5-4 Scorchers have surged to third with three straight wins over the Renegades (6 wickets), Heat (34 runs) and Hurricanes (77 runs).

Mitch Marsh’s 93* off 41 against Brisbane electrified Perth’s campaign. Josh Inglis plundered 73 off 46 against Hobart, while Jhye Richardson took 4/19 as the ’Canes crumbled to 98 all out.

Meanwhile, the 8-1 Stars have won six in a row. Marcus Stoinis (147* off 79) smashed the highest score in BBL history as the Stars racked up the highest team total of the season (1/219) against the Sixers on Sunday night.

Clint Hinchcliffe (3/20) shone with the ball as the Stars completed a 44-run victory.

Australian ODI squad rejects Stoinis (478 runs at 79.66) and Glenn Maxwell (316 runs at 79) have been in world-beating form with the bat. They are first and fourth on the BBL’s run charts respectively. Marsh (347 runs at 49.57) is second, while Inglis has a team-high three fifties for the Scorchers.

Despite missing the playoffs while the Stars went on to reach the BBL final, the Scorchers won both encounters between the sides last season.

Cameron Bancroft (59 off 42) and Jhye Richardson (4/18) negated a superb knock from Ben Dunk (62 off 47) in Perth’s six-wicket win at the MCG. Likewise at Optus Stadium, Ashton Turner (69 off 42) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (3-30) ensured Glenn Maxwell’s 61 off 40 was to no avail as the Scorchers won by 27 runs at home.

But Turner is in India on ODI duty, as is Ashton Agar. Meanwhile, Coulter-Nile – overlooked by the Australian selectors – left the Scorchers for the Stars in the off-season.

The Scorchers boast a bowling attack capable of troubling the red-hot Stars. But it’s hard to back against the $1.62 favourites given their recent form. There’s a fair bit of Best of the Day value in the Most Sixes market, however, after the Stars cleared the rope 20 times in their past two games.
