Brisbane Heat vs Adelaide Strikers Preview

It’s crunch time as the BBL regular season heads into the home stretch. The fifth-placed Brisbane Heat are striving to snap a two-game losing streak when they host the bottom-placed Adelaide Strikers, who are only two points in arrears.

The Heat will be hoping to replicate arguably their best performance of the season – a 39-run victory over the Strikers in Adelaide three weeks ago. They powered to 7/208 on the back of a 114-run stand from Ben Duckett (78 off 47) and Sam Heazlett (49 off 30). Rashid Khan took three wickets for the Strikers.

Jonathan Wells (55 off 41) was the only Strikers batter to make more than 27. Mark Steketee (3/27) and an expensive Matthew Kuhnemann (3/47) ensured they struggled to build significant partnerships.

Brisbane crashed to a 5-wicket loss to the Renegades last Thursday and an 8-wicket defeat to the Hurricanes on Saturday with COVID-19 tearing through their playing ranks. Jake Lehmann (65 off 52) top-scored in a total of just 128 against the ’Gades, while second-gamer Lachlan Pfeffer (69 off 51) starred against the ’Canes.

Heat bolstered after quarantine chaos

But the Heat will get back a host of isolating big guns for this clash. Xavier Bartlett, Max Bryant, Ben Duckett, Liam Guthrie, Matthew Kuhnemann, Chris Lynn, Nathan McSweeney, Mark Steketee and Jack Wildermuth have all been cleared to return.

The Strikers notched just their second win of the season last Wednesday with a 7-wicket hammering of the Hurricanes. Peter Siddle (5/23) and Matthew Short (72* off 44) were on fire as they cruised to victory with 29 balls to spare. But the Strikers fell to the Stars by 5 wickets on Monday. Wells (68 off 56) played a lone hand in a total of 9/139, while Siddle (2/26) helped ensure the Stars’ chase went into the final over.

Matt Renshaw is currently sidelined after testing positive to COVID.

There’s little between the teams and the Heat are $2.00 outsiders with most of their line-up not having played for over a week. But they were finding form before COVID hit, while the Strikers have battled to post competitive totals for most of the season.
