Adelaide Strikers vs Perth Scorchers Preview
It’s a rare morning start for the Big Bash League ahead of the fifth Ashes Test in Hobart, with Adelaide Strikers facing a crunch game at home against BBL ladder-leading Perth Scorchers.
The teams met in Sydney early in the campaign, with the Scorchers cruising to a 49-run win. Colin Munro (114* off 73) plundered an unbeaten century in Perth’s total of 1/195. Matthew Short (63 off 47) was the only Adelaide batter to fire as the Strikers were bowled out for 146, while Andrew Tye and Jason Behrendorff both picked up three wickets.
The Scorchers have crafted a 10-2 record to all but seal the top seed for the playoffs. After being upset by the Thunder (6 wickets) last week, Ashton Turner (69 off 41) led a 5-wicket victory over the Sixers on Sunday before Laurie Evans (69 off 46) regained some form and Nick Hobson (46 off 36) and Turner (47* off 26) made important contributions in an under-strength side’s 47-run defeat of the Stars on Tuesday.
The nomadic WA outfit are sweating on the availability of Munro, Cameron Bancroft and Josh Inglis.
Munro (353 runs at 50.42) is third in the BBL’s run charts, while Kurtis Patterson (275 at 30.55) has been a stud at the top of the order with three half-centuries. Mitch Marsh has scored 255 runs in just five innings but is away on Test duty.
Strikers gear up for playoffs scramble
The 3-8 Strikers have slipped to sixth with three games remaining. But they will leapfrog the Stars with a boilover win here. They have won two of their last three, bookending Monday’s 5-wicket loss to the Stars with handsome wins over the Hurricanes (7 wickets) and, on Wednesday, the Heat (71 runs). Rashid Khan obliterated the Heat batting order with 6/17, skittling the home side for just 90.
Khan, though, has finished his BBL|11 commitments, rejoining the Afghanistan national side. Wes Agar is also out with a side strain and Matt Renshaw is sidelined with COVID. Jono Wells (303 runs at 30.30) and Short (292 at 29.20) have been the Strikers’ best contributors with the bat this season. The pair have hit two half-centuries each.
The Scorchers, unsurprisingly, are $1.55 favourites. Their depth and ability to adapt to line-up changes has been exceptional all season. Khan is a huge loss for the Strikers, who don’t appear to have the batting or bowling strike to roll the BBL’s best sides.
