Originally this game would have the Tiger Army packing out the MCG for their flag unfurling and an optimistic long-suffering Carlton supporter base with new hope for the season opener.

Instead, the MCG will have all the atmosphere of a Sheffield Shield match.

Richmond, the MCG and their fans have been a force to be reckoned with of recent years and while the Punt Road end will be empty – the Tigers go into the game favourites for obvious reasons.

The Tigers haven’t lost to Carlton since the 2013 Elimination Final and, while the football spectrum has changed dramatically since then, the Tigers haven’t been dominant in their season openers against their old rival but have found a way to get the job done.

I’d expect a similar kind of outcome, where the Blues will be highly competitive until the Tigers go up an extra gear and put the game beyond doubt.

The 1-39 point margin seems about right.
