It’s the general opinion of most fans and experts that the Power and Pies are the top two contenders for the flag this year, and we should learn plenty about just how genuine their claims are in Saturday’s rematch from Round 2.
The Pies put on a 71-point clinic at the MCG that afternoon, Nick Daicos dazzling with 32 disposals, and Brody Mihocek chipping in three goals for good measure.
That loss was the start of something special for Port Adelaide, winners of 13 straight prior to last week’s upset loss to Carlton.
Uncharacteristically, the Power fell behind when allowing six goals in the second term to the Blues, also getting dominated in the hit-outs and turning the ball over at crucial times.
Fortunately, Ken Hinkley’s side could be in for a boost with Charlie Dixon and Jason Horne-Francis likely returning to the side, but if the Power fail to take care of the footy, there’s no doubt this lethal Collingwood side will take full advantage.
For the Pies, Mihocek is a chance at returning to the forward ranks, not that they need any help on attack after booting 18 goals in two of their last three games.
Side by side, Port has actually averaged slightly more inside 50 entries and scoring shots compared to the Pies, but Collingwood does hold a clear advantage when it comes to conversion.
The battle through the midfield should be fascinating between the Daicos boys, Zak Butters, and Connor Rozee, but it still feels like the Pies might have a gear left to go.
They don’t have much left to prove, but with the chance to pick up a big scalp on the road and prove there is a clear gap between 1st and 2nd, the Pies outright look the play.
