North Melbourne Kangaroos vs Hawthorn Hawks Preview
The Roos captured the hearts of footy fans all over the country last week with a stirring win over Richmond.
In their first game following the sacking of David Noble, North leapt to a comfortable 32-point lead over the Tigers at half-time, eventually walking away four-point victors thanks to a huge six-goal bag from Cameron Zurhaar.
A win like that can do wonders for a club, especially one that has been lacking any real sense of identity, purpose, or confidence for the entirety of the season.
Meanwhile, at Hawthorn, things are still looking up.
The Hawks rattled off back-to-back wins for the second time this season with a late victory over West Coast, one that also featured their own six-goal bag from superstar small forward, Luke Breust.
Hawthorn first-year coach Sam Mitchell already knows a thing or two about North, having defeated the Kangas by 20-points at the ‘G back in Round 1.
The Hawks’ tackling and work around the clearances was far superior that day, while they also made North pay down back with tall forwards Jack Gunston and Mitch Lewis enjoying three goals each.
A lot has changed since then though, particularly on the defensive front.
The Hawks have been known to start fast and give up large chunks of points in the second half, as we saw last week when the Eagles came roaring back home to make a game of it in the fourth quarter.
The Tassie factor also has to be taken into account this week, especially after North picked up a memorable seven-point win at UTAS last season.
On wins and losses, the Hawks are probably the safer bet, but it’s hard to ignore the fact the Roos have not only beaten Richmond, but also lost by seven points to Collingwood a week earlier.
North has covered in four of its last five games as a home underdog against the Hawks, so if they can get their tails up early, the Roos might just make the race for the wooden spoon even more interesting.
