Melbourne Demons vs Brisbane Lions Preview

A rematch of last year’s Qualifying Final between what many believe to be the top two teams in the competition headlines the round .

The Dees will be hoping for a repeat performance of their 33-point thumping last August after suffering three consecutive defeats prior to the bye.

Suddenly, scoring has become a major problem for the reigning premiers, while their efficiency inside 50 has left a lot to be desired.

Brisbane, on the other hand, returns from the bye after defeating St Kilda quite comfortably at the Gabba two weeks ago.

The Lions have done extremely well to remain inside the top four, let alone on top of the ladder through some of their recent injuries, and they should confident knowing Dayne Zorko and Darcy Gardiner are both likely to return to the side.

Statistically, there isn’t much separating these two sides, but the Lions do look to have a clear advantage when it comes to clearances and tackles.

Brisbane’s pressure has been immense all season, an area that cost Melbourne dearly in their Queen’s Birthday loss to Collingwood.

The only knock on the Lions has been their slow starts.

Brisbane has shown a tendency to get away slowly in the first quarter, which of course, is a recipe for disaster against a class side like Melbourne.

Still, Brisbane’s forward line should give the Dees a real challenge down back.

Melbourne gave up 12 marks inside 50 to the Pies, and it’s fair to say Brisbane’s forward line is much more potent featuring a wide range of weapons – especially with Joe Daniher back in the fold.

The line looks just about right for a clash between 1st and 2nd, but based on recent form, the Lions to cause an upset looks a good bet.
