From a punting perspective, both of these teams are a real letdown.

This is probably the case from an actual real-life fandom perspective as well.

Carlton is 4-7 at the halfway point of the season, needs to be at least 8-3 to make the finals and it probably won’t happen.

The Blues went down to Sydney by 22 points in a highly entertaining contest which was in the balance before the Swans went bang in the last quarter, resulting in yet another close but not close enough loss for Carlton. This has very much been the norm in the Teague-era.

West Coast has proven to be flat-track bullies not just away, but at home as well.

The Eagles were 29-points up against Essendon and let the Bombers run away with it, last quarter fade-outs are becoming more frequent and the injury list is starting to pile up.

Clinging on to their spot in the eight, the Eagles really need to start banking the wins if they want to have another crack at finals, let alone the top four.

The game has been moved to the SCG, a venue in which West Coast has not won a game since Round 9, 1999.

Mick Malthouse was Eagles coach, Guy McKenna their captain, and Tony Lockett needed just six more goals to reach 1300 and break Gordon Coventry’s record. Plugger kicked three for the day.

That’s how long it has been since West Coast tasted victory at the SCG.

So, if anything it gives the Blues a somewhat historical home ground advantage oddly enough.

However, I’m backing Carlton in this because at the moment the Blues feel a far more reliable bet in a contest between two unreliable teams.
