Brisbane Lions vs Richmond Tigers Preview

One of these teams is playing good football heading into September and the other is not.

Richmond has won their last four by an average of 43 points, beating up on Port, Hawthorn and Essendon to close out the regular season.

The Lions have won just two of their last four which includes a demoralizing loss to Melbourne at home in the final round by 58 points.

We only have to go back to Round 20 for a direct form reference between these two teams, a match in which Richmond won by just seven points at the MCG.

But the Lions earned a home ground advantage which, despite a poor finals record in recent years, is a big plus for them.

Richmond has won 17 of their last 19 games against Brisbane and they are clearly peaking at the right time of year after a very up and down season which includes a loss to North Melbourne just six rounds ago.

Marcus Adams looks like he will be unavailable which poses a huge problem for Brisbane’s defence especially with Tom Lynch in white hot form at the moment having kicked 4+ goals in his last four games.

The key to Brisbane being competitive in this game is their pressure in the contest and on the ball carrier.

The Lions have averaged more tackles and less turnovers than Richmond, but they have been beaten in both these areas in their last three head to head games against the Tigers.

One of the biggest knocks on Brisbane is that their style of football does not hold up in September and these stats need to change fast.

Richmond are at their best when you allow them to move the ball quickly with little pressure and their last 12 straight away games have gone over the total match points line.

This line is incredibly high because their last few encounters have been shoot outs, but this is finals football and I’m expecting a hard fought contest when the ball is in dispute for large periods of the game.
