Brisbane Lions vs Collingwood Magpies Preview

Last week’s results have set the stage for a massive clash between Brisbane and Collingwood at the Gabba on Thursday night.

The Lions were the better team for three-quarters last week against Geelong before things ultimately went pear-shaped in the final term.

After Dan McStay left his mark, the Cats eventually managed to shut down Brisbane’s tall timber inside 50 – holding them goalless on the way to a 10-point win that wasn’t without some controversy.

The Pies also lost a game they’d probably like to have back against the under-manned Eagles.

Collingwood suffered a similar fate after leading for most of the game as the absence of Jordan deGoey, and some basic misses in front of goal cost them dearly.

Brisbane heads into this game as the firm favourite and there is certainly a lot to like about the Lions based on their 5-2 record on the back of a loss over the last 12 months.

Head coach Chris Fagan admitted that Geelong was the better team last week, a line that should motivate his side in front of a big home crowd.

Collingwood’s forward line is also a serious worry heading in.

DeGoey should be back, but the absence of Jamie Elliott for the next few weeks will be felt immediately.

The Lions, on the other hand, are one of the healthiest teams in the competition, and there’s no question their midfield is far superior to Collingwood’s.

This is a big game for both clubs, but Brisbane should get home comfortably.
