This week the PGA Tour is off to San Antonio, Texas for the Valero Texas Open. The tournament dates back to 1922 and has always been played in the San Antonio area. Numerous courses have hosted the event during this time.
This year the tournament is being played on the AT&T Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio where it has been for the last five years. It is a Par 72, 7522 yard course that was designed by Greg Norman with the consultation of Sergio Garcia and was opened in February 2010. The tees, fairways and rough are Bermuda grass while the greens are Ultradwarf Bermuda grass.
The course is rated one of the more difficult Par 72 on tour with the thick rough and tight fairways playing havoc on the field. Driving accuracy and Greens in Regulation are two stats that stand out this week. This year the rough is noticeably shorter while several greens went under renovation prior to last year’s tournament. Precision play from tee to green will be important again this week.
The Purse this year is US$6.2 million with the Winner taking home US$1,116,000. Last years Champion Steven Bowditch is back to Defend his title.
Other notable players to tee it up this week include Martin Kaymer, Phil Mickelson, Kevin Na and Billy Horschel.
The two players to follow this week are:
Ryan has been flying under the radar this season while playing some great golf. From six starts this year he’s had five Top 25 finishes.
Most players would love to have his results in 2015. Being 17-10-2-Cut-25-12. With form like that you can see why he is on my radar this week.
As a local Texan he hits the ball low and loves it when the wind gets up. This could be just the week to get onboard.
Stats wise Palmer is ranked 21st in greens in regulation, 9th in strokes gained tee to green, 12th in birdie average, 4th in scoring average, 31st in ball striking and 19th in scrambling.
I have been watching Todd with a close eye this year and have been waiting for the right time to strike. This is the week!
From seven starts this year he’s had five Top 25 finishes. His last four starts have been T10th AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am, T14th Northern Trust, T23rd WGC Cadillac Championship and T24th Valspar Championship.
When it comes to his game he is hitting the ball very well. Brendon is ranked 21st in driving accuracy, 31st in strokes gained tee to green and 13th in scrambling.
In this tournament last year he was T6th, so expect another bold showing this year. At the current odds he is a great each way selection.
