A win at this week’s Tour Down Under would be the perfect end to a remarkable career for Cadel Evans.
The 2011 Tour De France champion will hang up his bike on February 1, but in a sport often associated with romance, it appears punters aren’t buying into the fairytale finish.
Tasmanian Richie Porte has been the best backed to win the race, firming from $3 into $2.50 at Sportingbet.com.au since taking the national time trial title two weeks ago.
Cadel’s odds have eased from $6 to $6.50 at Sportingbet but he maintains outright second favouritism.
“Those odds seem generous when you consider Cadel’s team will be doing everything in their power to ensure the Aussie legend goes out with a bang,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.
“Cadel has the form to win and he’ll no doubt have tens of thousands of roadside fans behind him too.”
In Stage 1 betting, Marcel Kittel is the clear-cut $1.90 favourite in front of Giacomo Nizzolo at $9.
