Porte now finds himself as the team leader of Team Sky and a genuine contender to win the Tour’s General Classification.

Porte sits a clear-cut third in Sportingbet’s outright winner market behind new $2.30 favourite Vincenzo Nibali and former winner Alberto Contador at $2.50.

“The form Porte has shown so far suggests he’s going to be more than competitive against the likes of Nibali and Contador in the weeks to come and the Aussie is now one of the favourites to be on the podium in Paris,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.

“Nibali and Contador will be tough to beat but Froome’s withdrawal reminds us that anything can happen at the Tour and Porte has a fantastic chance of becoming the second Aussie in four years to win cycling’s toughest race.”
