Simon Clarke is the $2.20 favourite with online bookmaker Sportsbet.com.au to defend his Herald Sun Tour title, which gets underway tonight with a prologue through the streets of Melbourne’s CBD.
The Orica-GreenEDGE World Tour star is coming off a second placing in last weekend’s Cadel Evans farewell race in Geelong.
Six-time track world champion Cameron Meyer is considered Clarke’s biggest danger at $7.00 ahead of Italian Franco Pellizotti ($9.00) and Aussie young gun Cameron Wurf ($9.00).
“Simon Clarke is pretty short but with Simon Gerrans injured, he is the main man in the powerful Orica-GreenEDGE team as well as the defending champion. He really is the obvious favourite,” said sportsbet.com.au’s Christian Jantzen.
